Eligibility Guidelines for Career Advancement Grant
1. Current Employment as a DSP (or as a direct care, front line staff member)
Applicants must:
- Be currently employed as a Direct Support Professional in New Jersey.
- Work for an organization that provides services to individuals with disabilities, seniors, or other vulnerable groups.
- Provide:
- Proof of employment (e.g., pay stub or employer letter).
- A letter from the employer confirming support for the DSP’s participation in the program and a commitment to accommodate scheduling needs without loss of pay or benefits.
2. Enrollment at a New Jersey Community College
Applicants must:
- Be enrolled or accepted in a course at one of New Jersey’s 18 community colleges.
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Be pursuing a degree or certificate in a caring career field, such as:
- Human Services
- Social Work or Pre-Social Work
- Nursing (LPN, RN, or Pre-Nursing)
- Occupational or Physical Therapy Assistant
- Public Health, Behavioral Health, Gerontology
- Inclusive Early Childhood Education
- Or any related field focused on care for vulnerable populations
3. Course Requirements:
- The grant covers one course per semester, up to four credits.
- Eligible expenses include:
- Tuition
- Required course and college fees
- Required textbooks
- Remedial/developmental courses (e.g., Math, English, ESL) are also covered if needed.
Successful Completion
Must receive a grade of "C" or better to remain eligible for future funding. Proof of completion (transcript or report card) must be submitted to the New Jersey Council of County Colleges.
New Jersey Residency
Applicants must be New Jersey residents.
How the Grant Works
Step 1: Apply and Enroll
- Enroll in an approved course at your local community college.
- Submit required documents, including proof of employment and FAFSA.
Step 2: Verification
- A college representative will confirm your eligibility and share details with the New Jersey Council of County Colleges, including:
- Personal and employment information
- Course and program details
- Total cost of course, including books and fees
Step 3: Payment
- The Council pays the community college directly on your behalf.
Step 4: Complete the Course
- Finish the course with a grade of C or better.
- Submit proof of successful completion to remain eligible for future semesters.

Limited Funding – Apply Early!
Funding is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, while funds are available through the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education.
